Father's Day Events in Raleigh This Weekend

This weekend, you’ll find lots of events designed to entertain dads, moms and kids as celebrations of Father’s Day, Flag Day and 2nd Saturdays cultural programs take over the Triangle. Start the weekend off by enjoying a free outdoor movie and more on Friday, 5 p.m.-10:30 p.m. at City Plaza in Raleigh. This PNC Downtown Raleigh Movie Series event will feature live music and food trucks. Find more movie deals for families close to your home in this roundup.

On Saturday, join the Smithsonian's effort to lead the largest group of people singing the national anthem in history—from the National Mall in Washington, D.C., to Daniels Auditorium at the Museum of History in Raleigh. Celebrate Flag Day and the bicentennial of the "Star-Spangled Banner" as part of this live, streaming concert and sing-along. Learn more here.

For a look at local arts, culture and N.C. experiences, head to the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources’ 2nd Saturdays programs, which will be hosted at state historic sites and museums this Saturday. Many programs are free or inexpensive. Here’s a look at what’s happening in the Triangle this Saturday:
  1. The Historic Stagville site in Durham will feature a free Juneteenth Festival with crafts and games. View North Carolina's rarely seen copy of the 13th Amendment, which ended legal slavery in America. The document is on a limited tour of select state historic sites. Also opening is the Freedom for All Tour of informational panels that describes the evolution from the Emancipation Proclamation to the 13th Amendment. Genealogist Michael Williams will share research that led from New York to his Stagville roots and singer Yolanda Hall will perform spirituals in front of slave cabins. (Photo at right of Historic Stagville courtesy of N.C. Department of Cultural Resources)
  2. Head to the Duke Homestead in Durham to celebrate Durham's historic roots and experience the modern art, music and food of the Bull City at Bullfest, a free program. Observe the lifestyle of the Duke family in the 1870s and their early tobacco business on the homestead. The North Carolina Songwriters Co-op will provide entertainment by live local musicians all day long. All vendors and arts and crafts creators are Durham-based.
  3. The N.C. Museum of Art in Raleigh will feature a “Family Fun Saturday” with a royalty theme. Explore the regal headgear and sculptural portraits from the African and classical collections and create miniature royal portraits of your family from clay and mixed media. Selected works will be displayed in an upcoming exhibition. The fee is $5.
  4. Watch N.C. artist Alyssa Hinton at work at the Museum of History in Raleigh. Take part in the free “Make It, Take It: Mix That Media!” program to create a mixed media picture to take home.
  5. Enjoy the N.C. Symphony’s Summerfest: Cirque de la Symphony performance featuring high flying aerialists, daredevil cyclists and music at Koka Booth Amphitheater in Cary. Take your lawn chair and picnic basket. Children can enjoy an instrument zoo. The gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the concert starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $33 to $35.
More Father’s Day Fun
Does Dad enjoy exercising? O2 Fitness, a locally-owned N.C fitness company, is rolling out the red carpet for dads this Father’s Day weekend. Dads can work out for free at any 02 Fitness location from June 13-15. During that time, dads can use the clubs’ weights and fitness equipment, join in an array of group exercise classes, use the locker rooms and, most importantly, gain access to free club childcare. Learn more in my earlier blog here.
The Raleigh Little Theatre’s Stephenson Amphitheatre will feature a special Father’s Day concert with local and national jazz musicians starting at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $10. The amphitheater is located next to the Rose Garden at Raleigh Little Theatre at 301 Pogue St. Doors open at 6 p.m. for the performance, which is the 3rd annual Paul Montgomery Memorial Father’s Day Jazz Concert. If you enjoy watching shows at amphitheaters, browse this roundup of local amphitheaters in the Triangle.

Are cars Dad’s passion? The Wake Forest Charity Car Show Saturday, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., in downtown Wake Forest offers displays of classic, antique and muscle cars as well as live music, demonstrations, and food and retail vendors. Admission is free.
