A Look at Large Format Printing

Large scale printing is referred to within the printing industry as large format printing. Sizes range from several feet all the way up to eighty-two feet. Large format printing is most commonly used for advertising and marketing purposes. Large format printing allows for the creation of large pieces that deliver images and messages to a large number of people at one time.

Large format printing is commonly used to create products that are in some way used to deliver a message, such as marketing or advertising. Large format printing is an ideal solution for advertising needs because it allows for a message to be delivered to many people at once. As an individual passes by a poster or billboard, he or she sees the message that is being delivered. Common products created with large format printing include:

• Banners
• Posters
• Building Wraps
• Billboards
• Floor adhesives

All of the above products have a wide range of applications within the advertising and marketing world. Common uses for products created with large format printers include:

• Shop Announcements
• Welcome Banners
• Banners for Trade Shows
• Advertisements

Large format products are used both in and out of doors. Depending on the end use, different substrates and ink treatments may be more ideal than others. For example, if a banner is to be used outdoors and it is desired that the banner be used long-term, a UV protective ink and treatment will be recommended. Conversely if a banner is to be used indoors and not very often, UV protection may not be as necessary. Often, such products are reused in multiple locations for different purposes. Particularly for materials created for trade shows, the life of a product from a large format printing process is expected o be fairly long.

When it comes to what substrate to print on, the type of material used is often dictated by the way it is going to be used. For example, vinyl printing is common for banners that are going to be used indoors or outdoors. Wall, window, and floor graphics are commonly used both indoors and outdoors to announce short-term promotions such as sales or other specials.

Various levels of detail can be achieved with large format printing, which typically relies on vector graphics.

Factors Affecting Cost

There are several factors one should consider when planning for the use of large format graphics in business. The factors that can affect pricing on a large format product include:

• The type of substrate you are printing on
• The intricacy of the design you are having printed
• The size of the design
• The shape of the final product

You should also consider whether or not your final product is going to require installation at its destination. For example a simple banner may be easy to hang, however a building wrap will require professionals to hang the piece. You should look into the costs of installation and factor those costs in before making a decision as to whether or not to use a large format printed product in your particular campaign.
